Audience: The audience would be the community you live in and the customers base that might appeal to the product.
Situation: There is a business that needs help in advertising to promote for their business or a product they sell.
Product: The product is the sign that you are being commissioned to design.
Standards: We will use the design cycle and follow the visual arts standards.

- To create an interesting design that is eye-catching to the viewer.

Vocabulary:
Font: different styles or designs of character (or letters) in a language.
Text: how you say something using any given language…using your font.
Retail: the sale of goods to the public, for consumption or use.
Consumer: a person who purchases products or services for personal use.
Marketing: a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering a
message to the consumer, in order to express the advantages of a
particular product.
Color Palette: your choice of colors…it is important to keep your color
palette minimal, as to not confuse the consumer.
Format: the shape or design of your final composition (ex. square and flat
or 2-dimensional vs. double sided A-frame with 3 dimensional pieces
attached).
Visual Culture:A field of study that generally includes some combination of cultural
studies, art history, critical theory, philosophy and anthropology, by focusing on
aspects of culture that rely on visual images.
Communication: The exchange or transfer of of signals, facts, ideas and symbols. It
requires a sender, a message, and a receiver. Effective communication requires a
common “language” (which may be written, spoken or non-verbal).
Audience:An individual group who receive and/or respond to art.
Markets: A field of trade or business, where products are advertised and sold.
Commodities: An article of trade or commerce, that is seen as useful or valuable.
Commercialization: the offering of a commodity for sale.
Procedure:
- We will first look at examples of chalkboards, and other artwork, that have been created to sell retail products.
- You will begin by creating a product (real or imaginary), or a business concept that will become the focus of the work of art, in the form of a thumbnail drawing.
- Next you will write a brief description of the product/business concept….what does the product/business do, or how can it be used? Who is the market for the product/business?
- Now you will begin to create a format for your artwork. Is it square or rectangular, a circle or triangle, or the shape of the product? Will it be the actual large format sign...OR a small drawing of the sign along with a 3D prototype of the product/business? Will you create a video commercial that somehow tries to sell a product or advertised for a business? Once you have decided on a format, you will begin creating your composition, again, creating a second small thumbnail.
- In your sketchbook, practice several styles of font and see how they work together. Decide on where the text will go and mark that area on your thumbnail. You will need to go through each of the steps of the design cycle criterion s you develop your design brief.
- Once you have decided on your final format, cut out the material to be used for your composition (paper, foam core, etc.) and begin transferring thumbnail, using pencil or chalk. (Remember...For your presentation you may choose to create a large format sign, OR a small drawing and a 3D prototype of the product/business.)
- Once your design production is completed, you will fill out a rubric and give yourself a letter grade.
- Lastly we will have a class critique, discussing the individual works of art.
