Classroom Procedures (& Supplies)
Entering/Exiting Classroom:
Entering: When entering the classroom, line up outside the door, single file, and wait to be invited into the classroom. Upon entering the classroom, walk quietly to your assigned seat. First person to arrive at your table should retrieve sketchbooks from the cabinet drawers. Get any other necessary materials out (additional materials will be listed on the whiteboard) and put backpacks away, under your table (not in the aisles). Immediately begin bellwork activity (mindful muse and meditations).
Exiting: Before leaving class, clean up your work area. It is your responsibility to clean on top of, around and under your table each day. Team Leaders have the responsibility of doing inventory of table baskets at the end of each class, and reporting any missing or damaged items. You will NOT be excused until all areas are clean and clear of debris, and chairs are placed on top of the tables (4th and 8th period only). At the end of class, you will be expected to stand next to your table and wait for the bell to ring. When exiting, wait for teacher to excuse you by table team. I will excuse you, not the bell!!! Once your table is called on, you may walk quietly and respectfully out the door.
Seating: Seating is as stated, assigned, and the expectation is that you return to that seat each day. As time passes, I may choose to move some of you around in order to maximize learning. If you have specific needs or feel that a move might benefit you, please come and talk to me privately. Moving to sit with a friend is not a solution.
There may be times where you are asked to work in a different group, so please be respectful and open-minded if this occurs. When a Guest Teacher is present, the expectation is that you will sit in assigned seat, with nametag on your desk. Guest teachers will have a seating chart, so don’t try to be sneaky!
Bell Work: On regular school days (long days), we will begin with bellwork or a journal assignment, which you will be expected to do silently (approximately 5-10 minutes). If there is a journal assignment, please begin writing immediately. You are expected to be in your seat and ready to work (or writing) when the bell rings. Do not wait for the bell to ring to settle down and get quiet! This is a silent time for everyone to get focused and ready for the class...it is NOT social time. If you finish your bellwork before the end of given time, please find something to do quietly while others are finishing.
During Instruction/Demonstration: All students will be expected to sit silently and listen actively, as teacher or any other individual (student or guest) is talking. I will not speak over your voices. Raise your hand to speak or leave your seat, unless the teacher gives instruction for you to do so. Think about the nature of your question…is it something that might benefit the whole class or something personal that is between you and the teacher? Please do not interrupt by asking if you can use the restroom or if you can sharpen your pencil.
Table Teams: Each table will be assigned a Team Leader. The Team Leader will be responsible for retrieving materials (sketchbooks, etc) for your table. They will also be responsible for keeping your table on task...a gentle reminder should move everyone back to being focused, as well as inventory of table baskets at the end of each class period. We will swap out Team Leaders at the end of each quarter. Team Leaders are expected to be role models for your teams and to show leadership skills. If something needs to be taken care of, talk with your team. If you feel the team is not working well together, please have a conversation with the teacher.
Moving around the Room: There will be a lot of moving around the room to retrieve materials, etc. Please make sure to move around the room carefully and respectfully. Pushing and shoving people, stopping to talk to students at other tables and touching/taking items that don’t belong to you are unacceptable forms of behavior and will not be tolerated.
Classroom Materials/Supplies: When using materials, be respectful and use carefully. Make sure to put back all materials into their original place. If items are damaged, notify the teacher immediately. I will always demonstrate the use of new tool and materials/mediums, and the expectation is that you listen and follow directions. Materials are costly and can be dangerous if used improperly. Please don’t be the student that has the privilege taken away...you will be held accountable for destruction or misuse of materials and/or school property of the property of others.
Communication:
Classwork/Assessment: I will be using a combination of the classroom website and Managebac to communicate units/projects. We will be using Managebac to report assessment on individual units and formative assessment. The website blog will showcase artwork that is happening throughout the year, as well as school and community events that I would encourage students to attend. When absent or late to class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Please ask your team before you ask the teacher. If you have missed more than a week, you will need to set up a time to discuss make-up work with the teacher.
In class: In order to get my attention, you will need to raise your hand and wait to be called on. Shouting out questions (especially during instruction/demonstration time) is unacceptable behavior. In order to get your attention, I will give a verbal cue (voice/bell/other) and hold my hand up waiting for silence, before I speak. I will expect you to raise your hand to let me know you’ve heard me and are ready to listen.
Outside of class:
Guest teacher /Visitors Policies: The expectation for ANY adult on campus is the same. Whether it be myself, a guest teacher, Instructional Aid or any other adult person on campus...You must act and speak respectfully to them and follow their directions. Guest Teacher expectations are posted on the BEST/PBIS wall in our classroom.
BYOD/Electronic Devices: We are encouraging students to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for educational purposes. Devices such as laptops and tablets will be allowed to be used in art/design class during specific times.
When not being used, students will be asked to keep electronic devices in their backpacks or in the baskets on their team tables. All devices need to be treated with respect or the privilege will be taken away from the student. If a student abuses this privilege, the electronic device will be taken from the student and will need to be picked up by the parent/guardian, as well as a referral being given to the student. Damage/theft of other’s property is unacceptable and you will be held accountable. DO NOT touch what does not belong to you!!!
Devices are not to be used for playing games or communicating with friends and family (unless prior permission has been given by teacher).
Grading/Learning Outcomes: Students will have 2-3 big projects per semester. Missing one assignment can affect your grade greatly. Homework, quizzes, in-process critiques and sketchbook assignments will be assessed formatively, while final projects will receive a summative assessment, demonstrating learning. A rubric (given at the beginning of each unit) will be used to assess student work. Students will self-assess, as well as being teacher assessed and given a number score. These scores will be translated into a letter grade for the progress report and semester grades. These scores will be logged into Managebac and final grades will be logged into Aeries. If you have any questions or concerns about grading policies, please ask.
Turning in Projects/Sketchbook Assignments: Due dates for projects will be given at beginning of each unit. Only complete work will be accepted. Sketchbooks will be checked regularly to see that students are keeping up with progress in the unit. Sketchbooks will be turned in to...TBA. Homework and/or assignments are to be turned in to the basket at the back of the room,as you enter the classroom. The bin will be labeled with the appropriate class period. All assignments must have first and last name, date, and period. No name= no grade!!!
Safety: We will be using tools and materials in the art/design classroom that, if used improperly, could cause damage or harm. Please follow all directions and treat all classroom materials/supplies and people with respect. Misusing a tool can lead to loss of privilege and a referral. Remember, being SAFE is both a school and district policy.
Behavior: At HMS, we follow the district-wide program...B.E.S.T. ALL students are expected to be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE & SAFE! Remember that respect is earned. Please treat ALL others with the same respect you would like to be treated with.
Passes: In order to use the restroom, you must use the passes you were given. They are in your binder reminder and if you lose them, you will NOT receive more. If it is an absolute emergency, let me know and I will decide if it is appropriate for you to leave the class at that time. Milk Break, Lunch and passing periods are the times you should be using the restroom. Always sign out before leaving the classroom and sign back in when your return. All passes are hanging on the wall outside of my office. The procedure is that you sign out, put the pass around your neck and walk to your destination quickly and quietly. Stopping to talk to friends in the hallways or disturbing classes will result in loss of privileges and a referral. Don’t make that mistake…
EMERGENCY DRILLS: We will be reviewing these as a class...
1. Earthquake
2. Fire
3. Lockdowns
Tardies: Try not to be late. When you are late, you disrupt class and we lose learning time. If you arrive late, stand at the back of the room until I have finished taking role or talking. Once the teacher excuses you, you may head to your seat. remember...tardies will result in loss of your time, while you serve detention.

Outside of class:
- Parents: Email is my preferred means of communication, but messages can be left with the office and I will respond as soon as I am available. As I have a busy schedule, meetings in person need to be scheduled...no drop-ins please. I often have meetings after school and during my prep times…
- Students: Please check the classroom website or with your table group prior to reaching out to me. (I suggest getting contact info from your table team, in case you are absent and need to get caught up.) If those options fail, or you have other questions or concerns, feel free to email me.
Guest teacher /Visitors Policies: The expectation for ANY adult on campus is the same. - Individuals: You will need to take self-responsibility and make sure you get the most out of your education. The best way to do that is to listen and follow directions. You have no one to blame but yourself if you are unsuccessful. If you need help, ASK! If there is anything I can do to help you work towards that goal, please communicate with me...I am always willing to work with students who want to be successful :)
- Teams: There is no “I” in the work TEAM. Teamwork means that all team members need to learn to work together. This is not just a skill for art class, but a LIFE SKILL. If you are having a difficult time working with a particular group, please communicate that with me and we will see if we can make a change that will benefit all. Remember that participation and teamwork are mandatory and necessary for many of the projects we do in this class.
- Class: Each class will have different energy, competency and chemistry levels. Iwill work with each class and team to find the appropriate methods to ensure success and comfort for all. Remember that one star can shine bright, but a meteor shower has much much impact than a single twinkling star :)
